Polished Concrete

service detail

Not so long ago, concrete floors were the most basic type of flooring available, primarily used in industrial buildings and basements. However, innovative techniques have recently been developed, resulting in a new form of concrete that’s one of the most versatile and beautiful types of flooring available today. The popularity of polished concrete floors is growing rapidly thanks to their many benefits over other types of floors. Concreate has risen to become a leading authority on polished concrete, providing floors for residential, commercial and industrial applications.

Concreate is a specialist in installing and maintaining polished concrete flooring in the Melbourne area. This material is not only very durable, but is aesthetically pleasing and can be created in a wide variety of colours, patterns and designs.

Concrete Polishing Methods

While the name seems to implicate that this innovative flooring material is simply ordinary concrete that has been polished, polished concrete flooring is actually manufactured through a different process. After concrete is poured and has solidified, its cut and ground with fine-grit, diamond polishing pads. Once it’s been ground, a chemical densifier (usually lithium silicate, sodium silicate or potassium silicate) is applied to seal the surface and harden the concrete underneath. After the densifier has dried, the surface is polished again to give the floor a glossy finish.

While existing concrete floors can be retrofit to be polished, the colour and pattern will be that of the original aggregate. Installing new concrete is often less expensive, and the colour and design can be customised by adding a variety of aggregate materials, including but not limited to the following:

  • Granite
  • Stones
  • Black basalt
  • Glass
  • Quartz
  • Seashells
  • Metal scraps

Benefits of Polished Concrete

The concrete surfacing used by Concreate has several benefits over standard concrete and other types of flooring. For instance, polished concrete is extremely durable and much stronger than other materials. It is also resistant to heavy impacts, abrasions, water damage and surface stress.

Other benefits include:

Does not mark – Ordinary concrete is easily marked by rubber from tires and shoes, but this form of concrete will not mark, making it easy to maintain in an optimum condition.

Easy to clean – This material is very easy to clean because it is nonporous and finely polished. No scrubbing is necessary, and the surface repels oils and many other substances that would stain other floors. In addition, these floors never need to be waxed.

Increases ambient lighting – This form of concrete is so polished that it actually increases the amount of light in the room by reflecting it upwards. Some people with these floors have reported that they were able to reduce the wattage of their light bulbs.

Affordable – This is one of the most affordable flooring materials on the market, especially when all of the other benefits are taken into consideration.

Visually appealing – Polished concrete floors from Concreate are stunningly beautiful, and can be manufactured to complement any design or any existing decor.

Ecologically sustainable – This is one of the greenest materials that can be used for floors. It remains warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It can be made from recycled materials and can be recycled at the end of its lifecycle.
